It’s also the start of one of the new side-story villain threads that are optional, and while those don’t offer anything overly new in terms of gameplay, they do add valuable extra scraps of story. They flesh out these villains, allowing fully formed characters to emerge where once they were merely one-and-done boss battle appearances. A new personal favourite gadget called the Web Grabber – which pulls enemies in from a distance and makes them smack into one another – also playfully builds into this philosophy. I had a lot of fun using this before landing a sharp burst of Miles’ Venom lightning onto grouped-up goons, and now Peter can get in on that fun as well. They’re just as enjoyable, as it feels like the suit is trying to burst out of the rumbling DualSense controller in my hands. This aggressive style of play is rewarded, as the only way to heal is by building up your focus bar – filled by landing hits and timing perfect dodges – and is another way to make sure that exciting rhythm of combat is never lost.
Spider-Bots are a collectible of tiny robotic spiders spread throughout New York City, which unlock after the “Science Buddy” Main Story Mission. They’re unique as the only collectibles in Spider-Man 2 that aren’t marked directly on the map. Instead, you need to locate all 42 of them by looking for the large, colorful spheres that pulse periodically. Plodding in execution and pace, they served only to show how mundane a Spider-Man game could be without Spider-Man.
Speaking of great superhero stories, Insomniac Games of Ratchet & Clank and Resistance fame delivered one of the very best in its first Spider-Man game. The base formula of moreish 6v6 matches and excellent art direction have been supplemented by a tsunami of fresh content over the game’s first year, including a dozen new playable heroes and numerous new maps and modes. It’s difficult to evaluate games like Rivals since they’re constantly evolving and adding new stuff, but as it stands, it’s exactly the sort of game that’s easy to get lost in while playing with friends or climbing ranks in Competitive. Peter acts as Miles’ mentor and gets to exist firmly in a space where the movies (interested only in the drama) and the comics (interested only in sadism) have always refused to let him be. He’s got a healthy, functional relationship with Mary Jane Watson, a burgeoning reporter for the Daily Bugle, and although he’s struggling to maintain a job, he’s relatively well adjusted… for now. Kraven is one of the main bad guys in Spider-Man 2, other than Venom, of course.
The main story has that mix of slick but very linear action setpieces and quiet character moments common to almost all the modern PlayStation first-party titles—outside of those, the city is scattered with optional side missions and things to find. I can’t say that I noticed one dropped frame in my dozens of hours of playing. This allows Spider-Man 2 to shine in its most jaw-dropping moments – of which the main story offers many – as explosive action, sparkling electrical effects, and fittingly slimy symbiote gloop fill the screen. The main story took me around 18 hours to complete before I hit 100%, and the subsequent platinum trophy popped up to congratulate my efforts after 27 in total. Despite whatever loftier ambitions the story may have, this is still unapologetically an old-school approach to open-world game design, and nowhere is this displayed more clearly than in its optional quests.

Spider-Man 2 (PS5) brings back some of the old suits from the previous two games including news suits and outfits for this sequel from vintage suits to what-if scenario costumes.
